The Estate series is a 6-foot privacy design with 5/8-inch thick tongue-and-groove pickets. ProWood uses pressure-treated pine with a 15-year warranty against rot and termites. Vinyl Select is the newer line, 0.135-inch wall thickness on hollow posts, which matters more than most people realize in Los Angeles heat.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see constantly: Wellborn Estate pickets from before 2014 are milled 5/8 inch thick, while current stock runs closer to 5/8-inch nominal but measures slightly thinner after drying. If someone swaps in a modern picket on an older rail system, the gaps look wrong and the boards rattle. We measure the picket with a caliper before touching the job. Takes ten seconds. Saves a bad match.

For the vinyl line, Wellborn Vinyl Select posts are square-routed internally for their own bracket system. A genuine Wellborn bracket seats flush. The aftermarket brackets from the big box stores leave a 1/8-inch wobble that gets worse every year. We’ll use a quality aftermarket equivalent for minor hardware like gate hinges and latch plates, but brackets and post caps we keep OEM. The difference is visible from across the yard.

If you’re not sure which Wellborn line you have, check the bottom rail near a corner post. Older Wellborn rails are stamped on the underside with a small “W” and a two-digit year code. • Pickets pulling away from rails. On wood fences, this is nail withdrawal from repeated expansion and contraction. On vinyl, it’s usually a bracket that cracked. Wellborn’s warranty covers the vinyl, not the labor to re-seat it.
• White chalky film on vinyl panels. This is UV oxidation, common in Los Angeles where fences get direct sun ten months a year. It’s cosmetic, not structural, but it means the panel’s protective layer is degrading. Once it starts, it doesn’t reverse.
• Bottom rail touching soil or grass. We see this constantly in Los Angeles yards with automatic sprinklers. Moisture wicks up into the rail and rots it from the bottom edge. Wellborn wood is pressure-treated, but no pressure treatment survives constant irrigation contact forever.
