Which Sterling Models This Applies To

The quickest way to identify your model is to look under the shower base or behind the access panel; Sterling stamps a model number and manufacture date into the Vikrell material itself, usually near the drain opening. If that stamp is worn away, we measure the base and the surround panel geometry on site, which gets us to the right replacement kit without guessing.

Here is the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know until it costs them a return trip: Sterling changed the drain placement on several Ensemble models around 2012, moving the drain center from 13-1/2 inches to 15-1/2 inches off the back wall on the 60-inch bases. A replacement base that looks identical in pictures will not line up with the existing plumbing if you order the wrong generation. We check structure and measure before we order, not after. When the original Sterling part is still available, we install OEM; when a model is long discontinued, we spec an aftermarket base or surround that matches the dimensions and mounts to the same stud pattern. For discontinued Sterling colors and trim shapes, we have good luck with specific aftermarket kits made for the Ensemble and Performa footprints.

Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

• Cracks in the Vikrell base or surround. Vikrell is tough, but it will crack if the subfloor flexes or the original install didn’t shim the base level. A hairline crack near the drain means water has been getting underneath, and the only real fix is a tear-out and a new base set in mortar.
• Soft spots in the floor outside the shower. This is the tell-tale sign that water has been escaping past the surround lip or through a failed drain seal. In older Los Angeles homes with wood subfloors, the damage is usually bigger than the stain suggests.
• Caulk that cracks or peels within weeks. If you have re-caulked twice in a year, the surround is moving. Vikrell panels are tied to the studs with specific fasteners, and once those pull loose, no caulk bead will hold.
• The surround pulls away from the wall when you lean on it. This means the mechanical fasteners have failed or the backing board behind the surround has rotted. Either one requires opening the wall.
• Musty smell that won’t go away. That odor is moisture trapped behind the surround or under the base. In a Los Angeles bathroom with limited ventilation, it only gets worse, and it means mold is active behind the surface you can’t see.

A Sterling surround and base are not a weekend swap for most homeowners. The base has to sit dead level in a mortar bed; the drain has to land in the right spot with the right slope; the surround panels have to fasten exactly on the stud pattern; and the valve has to sit at the right depth for the trim. Get one of those wrong and you are pulling it out and starting over. If you want to check something before you call, look under the base for the model stamp, measure the drain offset, and take photos of the corners and the back wall. What we do not recommend is cutting into the wall or the floor yourself, because you are likely to find plumbing and electrical in the cavity, and water damage changes the job scope in a hurry.
