Schluter Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Schluter fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a complete installed system, though most single-run applications land in the $5,000 to $8,000 range depending on linear footage and existing post conditions. We stock Schluter-compatible fence components and can usually have your run measured, quoted, and scheduled within a few days. Most owners discover they need this work after a wind event, a bumped post, or simply noticing their fence line has started to drift out of plumb after a few Los Angeles summers.

Schluter is a name most people know from tile work, so finding their fence hardware on a residential line surprises some folks. But the aluminum post and panel systems carrying that name show up more often in Los Angeles than you’d expect, particularly in newer builds where the developer spec’d a clean, low-maintenance look. When a section fails, it’s almost never the panel itself. It’s the post, the anchor, or the fastening hardware behind it. That’s where we come in.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s fence line covers a few distinct series, and the compatibility gotcha we see most often is people assuming any aluminum post accepts any aluminum panel. It doesn’t. Post wall thickness and channel depth vary between the light residential post and the heavier commercial profile. If you have a panel that slides into a routed channel, you need the post with the matching channel spec. If your panel brackets on, the hole pattern on the bracket has to line up with the pre-drilled post face. A quarter-inch difference in post width will leave you with a panel that either won’t seat or rattles in the wind.

For the OEM versus aftermarket decision: Schluter’s OEM fence hardware is well made, and we use it when the job calls for it. But for post replacements, we often recommend a domestic extruded aluminum post with similar gauge and a powder coat match. It’s usually more available, it costs less, and when the post is the failure point anyway, you’re not losing anything by leaving the original panel in place. The panel is anodized aluminum in most cases; anodizing doesn’t peel, and Los Angeles sun doesn’t bother it the way it does vinyl.

Signs Your Schluter Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Sections leaning or drifting out of plumb. This is almost always a below-grade issue. In Los Angeles, our clay-heavy soil expands and contracts with the rain season, and a post set in undersized footing will start to lean within a couple of years. The panel may be perfectly straight, but the post it hangs on is moving.
  • Loose rattling when you push on the panel mid-span. Aluminum panels are light, so they telegraph loose hardware quickly. If the bracket screws are pulling out of the post, you’ll feel it long before you see it. Usually it’s galvanic wear between the steel screw and the aluminum post.
  • White oxidation bloom around fasteners or post caps. Aluminum doesn’t rust, but it does oxidize, and the white powdery build-up where steel hardware meets aluminum is a sign moisture is being held there. Left alone, the steel fastener is what fails first.
  • Missing or cracked post caps. Post caps are the first parts we see fail on Schluter fences in Los Angeles. Sun bakes them, plastic clips get brittle, and once a cap goes missing, water gets into the post. That’s the beginning of bigger trouble inside the post itself.
  • Gates that no longer close cleanly. The gate post takes more load than any other post on the line. When it moves even half an inch, the gate latch misses, the door hangs up, or the gap is bigger at the top than the bottom.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Schluter fence installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 to $10,620 on a typical job. On the lower end, you’re looking at swapping a few posts and re-hanging existing panels with new hardware. On the higher end, it’s full runs with panels, new posts, concrete footings where needed, and gate replacement. What drives the range more than anything is length of fence line and access. If we can get a truck right up to the work area, the job moves faster and costs less. A fence line in a tight side yard with no truck access means hand-carrying materials and more labor hours.

Every quote is a written line-item, parts and labor separated, so you see exactly what the aluminum costs and what the crew time costs. No allowances that turn into surprises. And every fence job carries the same 90-Day Done Right Promise we put on remodels. If something’s not right, one call and we come back to make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for missing post caps, push gently on panels to feel for loose hardware, see if the gate post has shifted by sighting down the line. That kind of inspection helps you know if the problem is one post or the whole line. But pulling and resetting aluminum posts means digging footings, pouring concrete, and getting posts set plumb in soil that wants to move. If you don’t have a laser or string line and you haven’t set fence posts in Los Angeles clay before, the fence will tell on you within a year.

There’s also the question of gates, which involve hinge geometry and sag that isn’t always fixed with a new post. We’ve seen too many homeowners replace a gate post and still have a sagging gate.
