Which Moen Models This Applies To

If your shower or tub has a single handle that you pull out to turn on and rotate to adjust temperature, odds are you have a Moen PosiTemp or Moentrol valve in the wall. Those two valve bodies account for the overwhelming majority of Moen bathroom fixtures in Los Angeles homes built from the 1970s onward. The PosiTemp uses a 1222 cartridge, the Moentrol uses a 1225. They are not interchangeable. Installing a 1225 cartridge into a PosiTemp valve body will either leak immediately or seize within weeks.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Los Angeles homeowners: Moen has kept the same basic valve body dimensions for decades, but the trim kits changed. A 1994 Moen Chateau trim will not fit a 2019 Moen Adler valve without a trim adapter plate, even though both are “Moen.” Before you order parts online, pull the handle and look for the model number stamped on the trim plate or the valve body. If you can’t find it, take a photo and we’ll identify it from the picture. We stock OEM Moen cartridges and a handful of quality aftermarket equivalents for older discontinued models, but for valves in the wall we only install OEM Moen. The aftermarket valve bodies we’ve seen fail early, and we won’t put one behind tile.

Signs Your Moen Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

• The handle turns hard or sticks in one position. This usually means mineral scale from Los Angeles water has built up inside the cartridge. The harder it gets, the closer you are to a handle that won’t move at all, which usually happens at 7 a.m. on a Monday.
