Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Kohler’s product lines share valve bodies and trim kits across dozens of model families, which is good news when a part fails. The Purist, Vibrant, Artifacts, Memoirs, and Alteo lines all use the same Rite-Temp pressure-balancing valve cartridge (the GP77759, for reference), so a $40 cartridge often fixes what looks like a $600 fixture problem. Wall-hung toilets, including the Veil and Reach lines, use an in-wall carrier system, and that carrier is where we see most failures in Los Angeles homes built before 2010.

To identify your Kohler part before you call, look for the model number printed on the underside of the lavatory faucet spout, inside the toilet tank on the left wall, or on the shower valve escutcheon plate. Kohler engraves or stamps these numbers: a four-digit model number and a six-digit finish code. If you can’t read them, take a photo and send it to us. The finish code matters more than owners expect: Kohler’s Vibrant Brushed Nickel, Polished Chrome, and Matte Black trims are all different SKUs, and the valve body behind them is the same. Aftermarket cartridges fit many Kohler valves, but trim kits and handles are where aftermarket parts show their seams: finish mismatch, sloppy set screws, and plastic handles that crack. We stock OEM Kohler cartridges and recommend the aftermarket route only where the original part is discontinued.

Signs Your Kohler Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Shower valve won’t hold temperature or drips constantly. The pressure-balancing cartridge has worn out or filled with Los Angeles hard water scale. A new cartridge restores stable temperature in under an hour. If you’re in a neighborhood with harder water, like parts of the Westside fed by older municipal lines, we see this one a lot.
• Faucet handle sticks or turns with a grind. Internal seals are failing. Running it longer wears the valve body, which turns a $50 part replacement into a $300 valve replacement.
• Toilet runs intermittently or hisses after flushing. The fill valve or flapper is the usual culprit. Kohler toilets use specific canister-style flush valves. A universal flapper from the hardware store often leaves a slight leak, which is why we keep Kohler’s canister kits on our trucks.
• Wall-hung toilet rocks or sags at the bowl. The in-wall carrier bolts or frame have loosened. This is a structural issue, not a parts swap, and in Los Angeles ADU conversions it’s one we trace to an original rough-in that was never properly blocked. This one is not a DIY fix.
• Finish is flaking or pitting on handles and spouts. Kohler finishes are solid, but harsh cleaners and hard water can take years off them. Once the finish fails, the part’s usually done: polishing makes it worse, and replacement trim is a straightforward swap.

DIY or Call Us?

Some Kohler parts are honest homeowner jobs. Replacing a fill valve or flapper inside a toilet tank is straightforward, and Kohler’s own instructions are clear. Swapping a shower cartridge is doable too, with one caution: water supply shut-offs in Los Angeles homes can be old, and if a gate valve is frozen open, you’ll have a live line to deal with. Don’t force an old shut-off valve.

Wall-hung toilet carriers and anything behind the wall are not DIY. If the carrier bolts are loose, the frame needs to be opened, blocked properly, and re-anchored.
