GAF Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We install and replace GAF fence systems across Los Angeles, with most full installations running between $4,130 and $10,620 depending on linear footage, terrain, and which GAF product line you’re working with. Same-day assessment is standard for us, and in many cases we can start the job the same week. Most owners call us after a wind event or a vehicle bump, and the conversation usually starts with “part of the fence is leaning and I don’t know if it’s the post, the panel, or the hardware.”

Here’s the thing we tell every Los Angeles homeowner: a fence that’s starting to lean is not a cosmetic problem. Once a post shifts, the panels bind, the gate stops latching, and the next heavy rain or Santa Ana wind finishes what started months ago. Tom Barrett and our crews have been replacing GAF fence systems in Los Angeles for over 29 years, and we’ve learned that catching the failure early is the difference between resetting two posts and replacing the entire run.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF manufactures several fence product lines, and the compatibility details matter more than most homeowners expect. The most common in Los Angeles are the GAF vinyl privacy fence, the GAF semi-private picket style, and the GAF post-and-rail used for larger properties in areas like Porter Ranch and Granada Hills. Each line uses different post dimensions, rail channel depths, and panel thicknesses, and they are not interchangeable. If you try to fit a semi-private picket panel onto a privacy-fence rail system, the pickets won’t seat and the whole run looks wrong from the first week.

To identify what you have, look at the inside face of a post cap. GAF stamps the product line and sometimes the extrusion date on the underside of the cap or on the rail end. The post wall thickness is also a giveaway: privacy systems run 0.135 to 0.150 inches, picket systems are usually 0.120 to 0.135, and post-and-rail can be as thin as 0.110. In Los Angeles, we also recommend OEM GAF parts wherever the fence is still under the original warranty, because mixing aftermarket panels into an OEM rail system can void that coverage. For older, out-of-warranty fences, we carry quality aftermarket equivalents that match GAF’s dimensions and color codes, and we’ll tell you the difference in writing before you decide.

One compatibility gotcha we see constantly in Los Angeles: homeowners who bought aftermarket post caps at a big-box store and find they don’t fit the GAF post profile. GAF posts have a slightly narrower top rim on older runs, and the generic caps leave a visible gap that lets water into the post. We keep GAF-spec caps on the truck for exactly this reason.

Signs Your GAF Fence Installation Is Failing

  • The gate drags or won’t latch. This usually means the hinge-side post has started to rotate in the ground, often because the original concrete footing was poured too shallow for Los Angeles soil conditions. A dragging gate puts constant load on the hinge screws, and they eventually strip out of the post face.
  • Panels bow or ripple between posts. In Los Angeles heat, vinyl expands more than most people expect. If the panels were cut tight during a cool-season installation, the summer expansion has nowhere to go and the panel bows. We see this most often in fences installed by out-of-area crews who don’t account for the San Fernando Valley’s temperature swings.
  • Water sits inside the bottom rail after rain. GAF rails have weep channels, but in older installations those channels get clogged with dust and debris, and standing water becomes a breeding ground for ants and causes the rail to sag over time.
  • Post caps are missing or cracked. In Los Angeles sun, UV breaks down plastic caps faster than the posts themselves. A cracked cap lets rain into the post, and over a few winters that trapped moisture compromises the post’s connection to the footing.
  • The fence leans noticeably after a wind event. Santa Ana winds are the big test for any Los Angeles fence. If your fence leans after a wind storm, the posts were likely set at 24 to 30 inches deep when they needed to be closer to 36 inches, or the footing diameter was undersized for the height of the fence.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full GAF fence installation in Los Angeles, our pricing runs from $4,130 for a shorter, straightforward run to $10,620 for longer runs with gates, difficult access, or significant slope. The labor and materials split is roughly 60/40 on most jobs, with labor being the larger share because digging post holes in Los Angeles soil, whether it’s the clay-heavy ground in the Valley or the rocky fill in the hills, takes real time.

Every quote we write is line-itemed: post count, panel count, post caps, gate hardware, concrete, disposal of the old fence, and labor. If the fence is shared with a neighbor, we’ll help you sort out which side owns what before any work starts. The job includes removal and haul-away of the old fence, and the work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if something’s not right, one call brings Tom Barrett back, and he’ll make it right.

We also honor two standing offers on this work: a free second opinion on any written estimate you already have, and no trip charge inside Los Angeles County. If you’re a senior or veteran, it’s 10% off, and we won’t make you ask for it twice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few things before calling: check whether the post caps are loose, note where any panels are bowing, and clearly mark any posts that shifted. That information helps us quote accurately over the phone. What we don’t recommend is digging a shifting post out and resetting it yourself. Once you disturb the footing, you’ve changed the post’s load path, and if the fence is on a property line, a DIY reset can create a boundary dispute with your neighbor that’s harder to fix than the fence itself. And setting posts in Los Angeles properly means knowing how deep to go for your specific soil and fence height. We’ve corrected enough homeowner resets to know it costs less to do it right the first time.

If your GAF fence is leaning, bowed, or just looking tired, call us at (877) 610-1318. We’ll come out, tell you what’s actually wrong, and give you a written number before anything gets dug.
