Which Delta Models This Applies To

Delta built its name on faucets and shower valves, but when we talk about home additions and ADUs, the Delta parts in play usually include shower systems, tub/shower trim kits, and the rough-in valves behind them. The two valve bodies we see most in Los Angeles additions and garage conversions are the Delta MultiChoice R10000 series and the older Monitor 1300/1400 series. They are not interchangeable. The R10000 accepts R10000-series cartridges, and the old Monitor line takes RP19804 or RP32104 cartridges depending on the year. If someone hands you a generic “Delta” cartridge and says it fits, check the number stamped on the brass body before you open the wall.

A second compatibility gotcha: many ADU builds in Los Angeles use Delta’s lower-cost matched sets from the Foundations or Classic line. You can swap trim, but you cannot put a high-flow Roman tub valve where a standard shower valve was roughed in, the flow rates and port spacing are different. When in doubt, take a photo of the valve body before you tile over it. We’ve solved more problems with a blurry phone photo than with any spec sheet.

OEM Delta parts are worth the money for anything water-touching (cartridges, O-rings, pressure balance spools). Aftermarket equivalents are fine for trim screws, escutcheon plates, and drain assemblies. Our rule of thumb on Los Angeles hard water: never cheap out on the part that stops a leak.

Signs Your Delta Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• The water temperature swings mid-shower. This is almost always a worn pressure-balance spool or a scale-clogged cartridge. On Delta R10000 valves, the spool is behind the trim and can often be replaced without opening the wall. If the hot water goes cold when someone flushes a toilet in the ADU, the balancing spool is done.
• The handle won’t turn off completely, or drips for minutes after you shut it. A dripping Delta shower or kitchen faucet usually means the cartridge seats have worn or mineral buildup has scored the body. In Los Angeles, where water is hard enough to etch glassware, we see this by year five or six on heavily used fixtures.
• You hear a knocking or banging when you close the faucet. That’s water hammer, and on ADU additions it often traces to a failed Delta rough-in valve’s shut-off stops or missing hammer arrestors during the original install. Don’t ignore it; repeated hammering will loosen solder joints inside the wall.
• The handle is loose even after you tighten the set screw. Delta handles use a plastic adapter sleeve that cracks over time, especially in ADUs that get hot in summer. A new sleeve is a ten-dollar Delta part. If the metal splines are stripped, the whole stem needs replacement.
• Low flow from one fixture only. If other fixtures flow fine, the Delta cartridge’s inlet screen is packed with hard-water scale or pipe debris. Sometimes you can clean it; sometimes the cartridge is done. On ADU additions built with old galvanized supply lines, plan on flushing the inlets every few years.
