Cover Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your Cover window or door has a failed part, we stock and install the compatible hardware, glazing, and weatherseals right here in Los Angeles. Typical out-the-door replacement work runs $470 to $2,125 depending on the component and the unit’s size, with most swaps finished in a single visit. Most owners discover a problem when a window won’t close flush against its seal, a sliding door starts grinding mid-track, or cold air sneaks in around the sash on a December morning. Those are the three tells that sent more than a few of your neighbors our way last winter.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover’s window and door lineup spans a handful of series that share a lot of internal hardware but differ at the sealing surfaces and track profiles. The units we see around the San Fernando Valley, Pasadena, and the westside are mostly Cover’s aluminum-framed sliders, vinyl casements, and the occasional patio door set. The single most useful thing you can do before calling us is check the label: it sits on the inside edge of the frame, usually near the latch, and it lists the series name and a four-digit date code. That date code matters more than the model name. Cover changed its roller diameters and nylon block profiles between production runs, so two windows that look identical from across a room can need different hardware. If the label’s worn off, we take a measurement off the existing part and match it that way.

Barrett & Sons Construction is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Cover. We install both OEM parts and quality aftermarket equivalents when they meet or beat the original spec. On high-wear items like slider rollers and casement crank gears, we generally recommend aftermarket parts with sealed bearings. The originals are fine, but for Los Angeles dirt and dust, the sealed units last measurably longer. We carry the common sizes on the truck.

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • Hard to open or close once the weather shifts. Aluminum frames move in Los Angeles heat. A sash that sticks in August or rattles in January usually means the nylon glide blocks have worn flat, and the frame is riding metal on metal.
  • Cold air at the edges even when locked. The wool-pile weatherseal on Cover units flattens over time. Once it loses its loft, air moves through the channel. It’s a five-dollar part on most jobs, but it makes a real difference in a drafty bedroom.
  • The window won’t stay up or a slider creeps open. That’s the balance system or the track rollers giving out. On Cover hanging windows, the block-and-tackle balances fatigue; on sliders, the rollers flatten on one side and the panel starts tilting slightly out of plane.
  • Condensation between the panes. The seal on the insulated glass unit has failed. Los Angeles humidity near the coast accelerates this. The glass can’t be resealed; it has to be replaced, but the frame usually stays.
  • The latch or crank spins without engaging. Cover’s crank gear sets use a die-cast body that strips over time. If the handle turns freely but the sash doesn’t move, the gear teeth have gone. We keep replacements handy because it’s one of the most common calls we get in the hills.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles, plan on $470 to $2,125 for most single-unit Cover window and door repairs. A straightforward weatherseal or glide block replacement sits at the low end, a full insulated glass replacement in a large slider at the high end. What drives the range is the part itself, the unit’s size, and whether the frame needs to be pulled from the opening or can be worked in place. Every estimate comes as a written line-item quote before we touch the unit. If the scope changes mid-job, you get a written change order first. That’s not our preference, it’s how we’ve worked since we started in 1998. The work is covered under our 90-Day Done Right Promise: any part or labor concern and we come back and make it right, one call.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things are worth checking yourself. You can confirm the label information, note where the window binds, and listen for grinding. You can even clean the track and see if that helps. But swapping out rollers, balances, or a crank assembly on a Cover window mostly means pulling the sash, and that’s where the trouble starts. The hardware is under tension in a few of these units, and an unweighted sash in the wrong hands takes off a finger. If the job involves high-tension balance systems or a heavy sliding panel, call us at (877) 610-1318. The estimate is free, and we’d rather talk you through what you’re seeing than hear you got hurt.
