American Standard Home Additions & ADU: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Home additions and ADU construction in Los Angeles typically run $53,100 to $153,400 for a full permitted build, with ADU projects starting around $106,200 when they include a kitchen and bath. Most Los Angeles homeowners don’t call us because they want to add space on a whim. They call because the garage is now a storage unit, the mother-in-law is moving in, or the teenager needs a door that locks from the outside. We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not affiliated with American Standard, and we build additions and ADUs that accept American Standard fixtures, tubs, surrounds, and wall systems without modification.

If you’re reading this because a specific American Standard component inside an existing addition or ADU has failed: a wall panel that’s buckling, a shower base that’s cracked, a tub surround that’s pulling away from the studs, or a door unit that’s binding in the frame, this page will tell you what’s fixable, what needs replacing, and what it should cost in Los Angeles. Most of the calls we get about American Standard parts in additions and ADUs involve the shower walls, tub surrounds, or the under-tub support structure where the original builder cut corners and now the unit flexes or leaks.

Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard makes three product families that show up constantly in Los Angeles additions and ADUs: the Americast tub line, the Ovation and Spectra shower wall systems, and the standard alcove tub-and-surround units most builders install by default. The Americast tub is the one you want: it’s a porcelain-enameled composite backed with a molded structural frame, and unlike older steel tubs, it doesn’t sound like a dumpster when you drop a shampoo bottle. The Ovation walls are five-piece interlocking panels that click together over a tub or shower base. The Spectra line is the budget version with thinner wall panels and a plastic drain that tends to crack at the threads.

Here’s the identification gotcha that catches Los Angeles owners off guard: the model number stamped on the underside of an Americast tub is not the same as the wall kit model, and the drain assembly is sold separately. If you’re replacing just one piece, you need to match the drain rough-in dimension. American Standard tubs ship with either a 14-inch or 16-inch rough-in, and if you buy the wrong one, the overflow won’t line up and you’ll be cutting into fresh drywall to fix it. Tom Barrett and our crews check this before we order anything, because we’ve seen too many Los Angeles homeowners buy a tub on clearance, have it delivered, and find out it doesn’t match the existing drain location.

Signs Your American Standard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • The wall panels are separating at the seams. This almost always means the original installer didn’t shim the studs flat before hanging the panels. American Standard wall kits need a dead-flat substrate; any hump or bow in the framing telegraphs through within a year, and the interlocking tabs pop loose. In Los Angeles, minor seismic settling makes this worse over time.
  • The tub flexes or creaks when you step in. That’s the under-tub mortar bed failing or missing entirely. Americast tubs are supposed to sit in a bed of mortar or expanding foam. Without it, the composite shell flexes, the enamel spider-cracks, and eventually water gets underneath and rots the subfloor.
  • The drain leaks into the room below. The rubber gasket between the drain body and the tub shell is the first thing to dry out and crack, especially in Los Angeles where crawlspace heat and low humidity harden rubber faster than coastal climates. We see this constantly in ADUs built over garages.
  • The tub surround has a soft spot or visible bulge. This means water has been getting behind the panel long enough to swell the drywall or the backer. By the time you can feel it, the damage behind the wall is bigger than the damage you can see.
  • The shower door rails are pulling out of the wall. American Standard wall kits weren’t designed to hold a heavy glass door without reinforcement. If the original installer didn’t add blocking behind the panels where the door anchors mount, the screws will eventually strip out and the whole door assembly sags.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full American Standard tub-and-surround replacement inside an existing Los Angeles addition or ADU, you’re looking at $3,540 to $10,030, which includes removing the old unit, repairing any water-damaged framing and drywall, setting the new tub or base properly with a mortar bed, hanging the new wall kit, and reconnecting the drain. If you’re also doing tile, the number moves up.

Here’s the line-item breakdown for the most common Los Angeles jobs:

  • Americast tub replacement only (keeping existing walls): $1,200-$2,400 installed
  • Ovation wall kit replacement only (keeping existing tub): $1,800-$3,200 installed
  • Full tub-and-surround replacement (Americast tub + Ovation walls): $3,540-$7,670 installed
  • Shower base + wall kit replacement: $3,540-$7,080 installed
  • Drain assembly replacement with access from below: $450-$950 installed
  • Full addition or ADU build with American Standard fixtures: $53,100-$153,400

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner in Los Angeles can safely check a few things without touching a tool: look under the access panel and see if the drain shoe is rusted, check whether the tub rim is level with a cheap torpedo level, and press on the surround panels to find soft spots. That tells you what’s wrong. Fixing it is a different animal. You’re working around water supply lines, waste drains, and tile that weighs forty pounds a square foot. If you get the mortar bed wrong, you void the American Standard warranty and the tub will crack within months.

Electrical and gas work are part of many Los Angeles ADU additions, and we recommend a trained professional handle those every time. Nothing about a home addition is worth an emergency room visit or a code violation on an unpermitted unit. If the part has failed inside an existing addition you can’t use, call us at (877) 610-1318. If it’s a full addition or ADU you’re planning, call the same number and ask for a free estimate. Tom Barrett grew up in the San Fernando Valley and learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and he’s been building and remodeling Los Angeles homes for the better part of two decades. We’ll do it right the first time, or we’ll come back and make it right.
