Which Cover Models This Applies To
Cover bathroom remodeling parts come in a few series lines, and the fit isn’t always obvious from the outside. The SurroundMax and Tile-Look series are the ones we see most often in Los Angeles homes, and they use different wall panel thicknesses: SurroundMax runs about 3/16 inch, the Tile-Look closer to a quarter inch at the flange. The part number sticker is usually on the back side of a panel or under the bottom lip of the tub apron, but if that’s gone, we measure the panel thickness and the drain offset to match it. That’s the compatibility gotcha: a panel that looks identical in a photo can be off by an eighth of an inch at the flange, and then you’ve spent money on a piece that won’t seat right. For OEM versus aftermarket, we’ve had good results with quality aftermarket panels on the older single-piece surrounds, but for the newer multi-piece Tile-Look systems we recommend OEM because the corner connectors are proprietary. We stock common Cover panel profiles on the truck and can special-order the oddballs within a few days.
Signs Your Cover Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Caulk that keeps cracking at the panel seams. This usually means the panel has flexed enough to break the seal, which points to a wall stud behind it that’s rotted or a panel that’s lost its adhesive bond.
- Soft spots or give when you press on a wall panel. Water has gotten behind the surround and is breaking down the drywall or the panel backing. By the time you feel it, the damage behind the panel is often bigger than the visible crack.
- Mold or mildew staining in the corners that keeps coming back. The water is trapped behind the panel, not on the surface. Cleaning the outside won’t touch it.
- A tub apron or wall panel that’s pulling away at the top edge. Cover surrounds use a top flange that gets screwed to the studs before the panel is set. When those screws pull through or the flange cracks, the panel starts to lean.
- Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. The leak has been running long enough to travel. This is the one that tells us the subfloor and framing need a look, not just the panel.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for a loose top flange, feel for soft spots, check under the tub apron for a part number sticker. But replacing a Cover surround panel is not a weekend project, and it’s not just about the panel. The panel has to come out without damaging the adjacent pieces, the wall behind it usually needs drying or repair, and the new panel has to be set with the right adhesive and a proper overlap at the seams or you’ll be doing this again in a year. Water damage behind a surround is also a mold concern in Los Angeles’s humid bathroom conditions, and mold remediation is something you want handled by someone who knows what they’re looking at.
