Belgard Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We keep Belgard-compatible pavers, edge restraints, polymeric sand, jointing compound, and drainage components on hand for Los Angeles driveways and patios, with typical installed replacement work running $826 to $2,950 depending on how much of the surface has failed. Most of what we stock goes out the same week we measure it, not the same month. You usually find out a paver driveway is failing the hard way: a low spot turns into a puddle after December rain, a row of edge pavers starts leaning toward the sidewalk, or the sand between joints washes out and the pavers start shifting under your tires.

Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Most Belgard driveway and paver failures we see in Los Angeles involve three families: the Mega-Arbel and Mega-Bergerac lines for driveways, the Holland Stone and Cobble paver lines for walkways and borders, and the Catalina Slab and Urbana Slab lines where homeowners wanted a more modern, flat-stone look. Each line has a different paver thickness, and that’s the detail that trips people up. Driveway pavers need to be 80mm thick minimum for vehicle traffic; a 60mm paver made for patios will crack under a pickup truck within two years. The compatibility gotcha we fix most often is when someone had one section patched years ago with whatever paver happened to match in color, but not in profile or thickness, so the new section settled at a different rate. We match profile by manufacturer size code, not eyeball, and we tell you up front when a direct OEM match is worth paying for versus a quality aftermarket equivalent that holds the same load.

Signs Your Belgard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers rocking or rattling underfoot. The base material below has washed out or settled unevenly. In Los Angeles, that’s usually from irrigation overspray or a downspout dumping water at one corner of the slab.
  • Edge pavers tipping toward the curb. The edge restraint failed, which allows the outer row to drift. Once the edge goes, the rest of the driveway starts opening up at the joints within a season.
  • Weeds or grass growing through joints. The polymeric sand has degraded, which means water is also getting underneath. Weeds are just the visible symptom of a base that’s beginning to erode.
  • Low spots that hold water after rain. Los Angeles doesn’t get much rain, but when it does, pooling water is a sign the sub-base has compacted unevenly. Water that sits accelerates the failure.
  • Visible cracks through multiple pavers in a line. A single cracked paver is usually impact damage. A crack running through six or eight pavers in a row means the base below has shifted, and replacing the pavers alone won’t fix it.

We usually see these failures show up around the five-to-eight-year mark on driveways that were put in with a thin base by a contractor who quoted low and left. Tom Barrett grew up in the San Fernando Valley watching crews pour foundations, and the first thing he checks on any paver job is what’s under the stone, not the stone itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles driveways, we quote Belgard-compatible paver repair and replacement work like this:

  • Single paver replacement or isolated repair: $826-$1,200
  • Section replacement, 100-250 sq ft, including base restore and re-edge: $1,800-$3,500
  • Full driveway re-installation with new Belgard pavers and compacted base: $8,260-$21,240
  • Polymeric sand re-jointing across existing surface: $295-$825

What drives the range is base condition. If the sand and gravel below is still sound, you’re mostly paying for removal, replacement, re-screeding, and compaction. If the base has been washing out for years, you’re paying to rebuild it right, which is the only way the new pavers won’t fail the same way. Every quote includes haul-off of the damaged material, new sand, and the workmanship covered under our 90-Day Done Right Promise. We don’t surprise you with a bill at the end; if we find something under the surface that changes the scope, it comes to you in writing before we touch it.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your own edge restraints, look for obvious low spots, and see whether joints are missing sand. What you shouldn’t do is start pulling up pavers on a driveway slope and resetting them without the right base prep. A paver driveway weigh enough that an improperly re-set section settles again within weeks, and you’ve spent the weekend building a worse version of the problem. We carry the edge restraints, sand, and matching pavers on the truck for most Los Angeles service calls, so the repair usually happens in a single visit. If you want an honest look at whether it’s a $300 or a $3,000 job, call (877) 610-1318 and we’ll come measure it.
