ActiveYards Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install ActiveYards-compatible driveway and paver components across Los Angeles, with most paver driveway installations running between $8,260 and $21,240 depending on square footage, base prep, and the specific ActiveYards series you’re working with. If you have a failed section, shifting pavers, or a gate post that’s pulling loose, we can typically match the part or source the correct replacement within a few days. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a corner paver sinks after the first heavy rain, or a gate post starts leaning because the original footing wasn’t set deep enough for Los Angeles soil conditions.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with ActiveYards, so we give you an honest read on whether an OEM part is worth the premium or whether a quality aftermarket equivalent will hold up just as well. Tom Barrett has been building and repairing driveways and paver systems across Los Angeles since 1998, and if your ActiveYards installation is failing, we’ll tell you exactly why before we ever quote a fix.

Which ActiveYards Models This Applies To

ActiveYards builds paver and hardscape systems that show up across a few different product lines: modular paver kits, driveway edging systems, and gate/pedestrian entry components that integrate with vinyl and aluminum fencing. The compatibility gotcha we see most often in Los Angeles is this: ActiveYards driveway pavers are typically sized in metric dimensions (common sizes run 200mm x 100mm x 60mm for vehicular-rated pavers, and 100mm x 100mm x 40mm for pedestrian sections), which means a standard big-box 4×8 paver will not seat properly against an ActiveYards edge restraint. If you’re replacing one cracked paver in a 200mm grid and you drop in a U.S.-sized paver, you’ll get gaps, lippage, and a patch that looks wrong from the street.

The other gotcha: older ActiveYards paver installations in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding Los Angeles areas often used a snap-in plastic grid system under the surface, not compacted aggregate. If that grid has broken down, which it does after 10 to 15 years of direct sun and vehicle weight, replacing the surface paver alone won’t fix the problem. We’ll dig a test section, identify the substrate, and match both the paver and the correct base repair so the fix holds.

Signs Your ActiveYards Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken or tilting pavers near the gutter line. Los Angeles winters bring short, heavy rains that erode sand bedding faster than people expect. If water isn’t channeling properly and the base is washing out, a paver will drop or tilt within one season.
  • Cracking along the driveway edge where the ActiveYards restraint strip meets concrete. Thermal expansion in Los Angeles, where surface temps swing 40 to 50 degrees between summer days and winter nights, puts steady pressure on the transition point. Once the edge restraint fails, the whole grid starts drifting outward.
  • Gate post lean or wobble at an ActiveYards entry. The post footing was likely set at 18 to 24 inches, which is not enough for the expansive clay common in the Valley. We pull them, re-set at 30+ inches with proper drainage gravel, and the lean doesn’t come back.
  • Pavers rocking underfoot or under tire load. That means the bedding sand has thinned or the substrate grid is broken underneath. Surface patching will last maybe six months before it settles again.
  • Weeds pushing up through joints at a much faster rate than neighboring surfaces. Joint sand loss means the pavers have shifted enough to break the interlock. It’s cosmetic today, structural in a year.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full paver driveway installation in Los Angeles using ActiveYards-compatible materials, plan on $8,260 to $21,240. Smaller paver patio work runs $4,130 to $12,980. If you’re just replacing a section of failed ActiveYards pavers, that’s usually a $2,000 to $6,000 job depending on how much base repair is needed underneath. If the concrete underneath an old ActiveYards system has failed and we’re doing a full driveway replacement, the range is $5,900 to $16,520.

Every scope we quote includes specifics: the exact paver count, the base depth we’ll excavate, the compaction method, and the edge restraint type. No allowances that aren’t on paper. The permit inspector works for you, not for me, which is why we like him. All work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, one call brings Tom back.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: run a level across the sunken section to measure how much drop you actually have, check whether the edge restraint strip is still seated or curled up at the corners, and hose-test the drainage to see where water actually pools. Those observations help us quote faster. What you should not do is start prying up ActiveYards pavers without understanding what’s underneath. If that snap-in plastic grid is intact and you crack it with a pry bar, you just turned a $400 paver patch into a $2,000 base rebuild. If the grid has failed, you’ll need to excavate and re-compact to Los Angeles engineering standards anyway.

If you’d rather not guess, call (877) 610-1318 and we’ll come look at it. No trip charge inside the county.
