Pella Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have a Pella paver driveway that’s settling, cracking, or pulling away from the garage apron in Los Angeles, we can match the existing pavers or recommend a Pella-compatible replacement and install it the same week. A paver driveway repair or partial replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $3,540 to $9,440 depending on how many square feet have failed and what’s underneath them. Most owners discover the problem after a winter rain, when a low spot turns into a puddle and then a soft spot, or when a paver shifts under the car and you hear that telltale clunk.
We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not a Pella dealer or affiliate. That said, we’ve installed and repaired enough Pella driveway and paver product over the years to know what holds up here and what doesn’t. Tom Barrett and his crew have been working Los Angeles driveways since 1998, and the most common call we get is a sunken paver apron right where the concrete meets the first course of pavers.
Which Pella Models This Applies To
Pella’s driveway and paver line isn’t one product. It spans interlocking concrete pavers, permeable pavers, and segmental retaining wall block that often runs alongside a sloped driveway. The compatibility issue that trips up Los Angeles homeowners is that Pella’s paver dimensions changed about twelve years ago. Older courses measured 60mm thick; newer ones run 80mm. If your driveway was built before roughly 2012, a new 80mm paver will sit proud of the surrounding 60mm course by a visible lip. That’s a checkable spec worth knowing before you buy anything.
The right way to identify your paver is to look at the underside. Pella stamps a mold number and date code on the bottom face of most pavers produced after 2008. Flip one over, wipe off the dirt, and you’ll see a four-digit mold number. If yours predates the stamping, measure the thickness with a tape measure and count the paver-to-paver joint width. Original Pella installations used a 3mm sand joint; some aftermarket replacements use 5mm or larger, which changes the whole grid. For OEM versus aftermarket, we’re honest with owners: a quality aftermarket paver from a Los Angeles supplier that matches your size and color within a tolerance is usually half the cost of OEM and will outlast the original in sun exposure. For structural retaining wall block on a sloped driveway, we recommend staying with Pella or a direct dimensional match. That’s where load-bearing matters.
Signs Your Pella Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- A single paver rocks underfoot or under a tire. That’s a broken paver edge or a base that’s washed out underneath. In Los Angeles, the freeze-thaw cycle only hits the high foothill areas, but irrigation leaks are the more common culprit everywhere.
- The sand joints are disappearing. You’ll see gaps opening between pavers, and weeds starting in those gaps. This means the sand has washed out through a low edge, which usually means the edge restraint failed first.
- A low spot holds water for more than a few hours after rain. Paver driveways drain through the joints, so standing water means the base below has compacted unevenly. In clay-heavy Los Angeles soil, that’s a base preparation issue, not a paver issue.
- The paver course is creeping toward the street or the yard. Driveways with any slope will slowly walk downhill if the edge restraint is gone. You’ll see a widening gap at the top of the driveway or a bulge at the bottom.
- You see a crack running through the middle of several pavers in a line. That’s a stress crack from a structural load point, usually a tree root or a utility trench that was never properly compacted before the pavers went in.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest pricing for Pella driveway and paver work in Los Angeles. These are installed prices, including labor, base repair where needed, new sand, and haul-away of the old material.
- Paver repair or partial replacement (under 200 sq ft): $3,540-$5,900
- Full paver driveway overlay or rebuild (400-800 sq ft): $8,260-$16,520
- Paver patio or walkway addition: $4,130-$9,440
- New paver driveway, full base prep included: $8,260-$21,240
What drives the range is base condition. If we’re just pulling and re-setting pavers on an intact base, the low end holds. If the base has washed out or the original installer skipped the compacted aggregate layer, we’re rebuilding from the dirt up, and that’s the high end. Every job gets a written line-item quote before we start. If the base turns out worse than expected once we open it up, you’ll get a written change order before we go further. No surprises at the end, ever. Tom Barrett’s name, address, and license number are on every quote, and the work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise. We’ll do it right the first time, or we’ll come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the edge restraint, look for the mold number stamped on the bottom of a paver, and measure joint widths. That tells you whether you have a true Pella original and helps you price the material. What goes wrong with DIY is the base. A homeowner can pull a paver and reset it in an afternoon, but if the base underneath is the problem, you’ll be back out there in six months looking at the same low spot. Dumping a bag of paver sand on top only hides the issue for a season. If your driveway has any slope to it, or the failure is in a load-bearing area where you park the car, call us at (877) 610-1318 and we’ll take a look. The trip charge inside Los Angeles County is on us, and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a $500 fix or a $5,000 rebuild.
FAQs
A properly installed Pella paver driveway in Los Angeles should last 25 to 40 years before the base needs real attention, though the sand joints will need re-sanding every 3 to 5 years in our dry climate. If yours is failing at year 10, that’s almost always a base preparation problem, not a paver problem. Call (877) 610-1318 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually looking at.
We can absolutely replace individual broken pavers, as long as we can match the size, thickness, and color. If the break happened because the base shifted, then the repair is temporary until we fix the base. Call (877) 610-1318 and we’ll pull one up and show you what’s underneath.
A partial repair of 200 square feet or less usually takes one day. A full base rebuild of a two-car driveway takes three to four days, including compaction and a final re-sand. Weather delays in Los Angeles are rare, but a winter downpour can push us a day or two.
We stock the most common Pella-compatible paver sizes and colors on the truck for repairs, and we can special-order exact matches from our Los Angeles suppliers within a few days. We also work with Belgard and Techo-Bloc pavers for full replacements or additions, so you have options beyond what Pella still carries. We’ll show you samples before we order anything.
