Which IKO Models This Applies To

We see two IKO product families most often in Los Angeles homes: the IKO Shingle Bath and Shower surrounds, and IKO wet-area waterproofing membranes paired with their pre-sloped tray systems. The Shingle line uses tongue-and-groove interlock panels with a proprietary corner extrusion, and the silicone-based gaskets on those corner pieces are usually the first thing to fail. The membrane line is a different animal entirely: once tile is set over it, you’re not replacing the membrane without tearing out the tile assembly above it.

Identifying your exact part means finding the model stamp. On the Shingle line, look at the back side of a removed end-cap or the underside of the threshold: there’s a raised mold number plus a date code. On the tray systems, the drain flange carries a laser-etched SKU beginning with “IKT.” If the label is gone, measure the drain opening and the panel thickness. IKO panels run 3/8″ for wall applications and 1/2″ for the shower base. Some third-party panels sold as “IKO-compatible” are 5/16″, and those never seat correctly in the IKO corner channels.

Signs Your IKO Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

• Weeping along the outside of the curb. This is almost always the door seal or the corner gasket losing its compression set. The rubber hardens, shrinks slightly, and water finds the gap. Fix the seal early and you’ve spent hundreds; wait and you’re looking at subfloor work in the thousands.
• Hairline cracks around the drain collar. We see this in Los Angeles more than anywhere else we work, partly because slab-on-grade homes here settle seasonally. The tray flexes microscopically, and over years the grout or the acrylic around the flange starts to show stress marks.
• Soft spots in the vinyl or acrylic at the bottom of a Shingle panel. Water got behind the panel at a seam and has been pooling at the base channel. The panel face usually still looks fine. The backing does not.
• Musty odor that comes back two days after cleaning. Odor that returns that fast means moisture is trapped behind the surround or under the tray. No amount of ventilation fixes a leak that’s feeding the area behind the wall.
• Door not swinging square anymore. The hinges may be fine. What’s usually happening is the curb or the floor beneath the tray has shifted. If the door was square at install and isn’t now, that’s substrate movement, not a hinge adjustment.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect a few things yourself: check the door seal for rigidity, run a bead of water along the outside of the curb and watch for wicking, and confirm whether the drain strainer is sitting flush. What you should not do is pull the threshold cap or corner profiles to look behind them. Those extrusions are under constant tension from the interlocking panels, and once they’re off, reassembly rarely seals the same way without the proper IKO shim kit. If the drain collar is cracked or the tray has stress marks, the waterproofing is already compromised, and a cosmetic patch will hold exactly long enough to do real damage behind the tile.
