• Sash won’t stay raised, or drops like a brick. The balance assembly has lost tension or snapped internally. In the CT-series lines, this was usually the pivot shoe or the spring itself. On a double-hung, you’ll feel the sash get suddenly heavy about halfway up.
• Sliding door sticks, grinds, or jumps the track. The roller cartridge wheels are flat-spotted or the bearings seized. You might see metal shavings on the track. That’s the roller housing wearing against the rail, and it only gets worse the more you force it.
• Lock or latch catches hard, or won’t catch at all. The strike plate has shifted as the frame settled, or the internal lock mechanism wore thin. On double doors, one leaf being slightly off makes the deadbolt bind no matter how hard you crank it.
• Condensation inside the glass (not on the surface). The insulating glass seal has failed. The window still works mechanically, but the unit will fog permanently and you’re losing thermal performance. This isn’t a hardware fix; the sash or the glass unit itself gets replaced.
• Draft you can feel standing still, especially through the lower sash corners. Weatherseal and pile strips have compressed flat or fallen out entirely. The fix is cheap, but in a hot Los Angeles August, you’ll feel the difference in your electric bill fast.
