Most units built after 2005 will have a small white sticker with a series code. If the sticker is gone, measure the hinge spacing and the door thickness with a tape measure. KraftMaid doors from different factory runs do not interchange, even when they look identical from the front. A Series 400 hinge will not line up on a Series 300 frame. We’ve seen homeowners buy parts online, drill new holes, and end up with a door that binds worse than before.

• The door drags or scrapes along the bottom. Usually a worn lower roller or a hinge that’s lost tension. KraftMaid doors with soft-close mechanisms tend to fail at the roller first, especially in LA kitchens where heat and cooking oils dry out the nylon.
• The window won’t stay open. The friction hinges or gas struts are shot. This is common in south- and west-facing windows in Los Angeles where three or four summers of direct sun breaks down the internal seals.

DIY or Call Us?

Some of this you can check yourself safely. Look at the hinge screws: if they’re loose, a screwdriver fixes that in five minutes. Inspect the weatherstripping; if it’s brittle or compressed flat, that’s a parts issue, not a door problem. You can also clean the track and check for debris stuck in the roller channel.

Where DIY goes wrong is trying to swap a tensioned hinge or a soft-close mechanism without the right parts diagram.
